Spring Plant Hazards For Your Dog

Spring has begun in the Carolinas! Even though they are beautiful, some plants are poisonous to pets if ingested. Some can even be deadly! Here are some plants to keep out of your dog’s reach:

Autumn Crocus – Can cause severe vomiting, gastrointestinal bleeding, liver and kidney damage and even respiratory failure

Azalea – Even a few leaves can cause vomiting, diarrhea, coma and death

Daffodil – Bulbs, plant or flower, can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain

Dieffenbachia – Popular in homes & offices, this plant can cause intense oral irritation, nausea and difficulty swallowing

Hyacinth / Tulip – If ingested in large amounts, these flowers can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea and increased heart rate

Lily – Tiger, Day, Asiatic, Easter & Japanese lilies are highly toxic to cats and can cause severe kidney failure

Oleander – This is extremely toxic and can cause severe vomiting, slowing of the heart rate and possibly death

Sago Palm – Can cause vomiting, bloody stools, damage to the stomach lining, liver failure and possibly death

If you think your pet has been poisoned, contact your vet immediately and do the following:

– Safely remove any remaining poisonous material from your pet’s reach

– Gather the substance to bring to the vet

– Collect a sample of any material your pet may have vomited
